Why go, and how to do it well
Thung Yee Peng is a community-run mangrove area on the east coast of Koh Lanta, facing the mainland, and it shows a different side of the island from the west-coast beaches. You can rent a kayak and paddle the channels, take a longtail ride of about an hour through the mangroves, or walk the boardwalk loop, which costs about ฿40 and takes 10 minutes or so at a steady pace. There's simple food at the jetty.
I'd treat it as a half-day break from the beach, best on a calm morning, and pair it with Lanta Old Town further down the same coast. Visitors who booked the boat ride say the guides share little about the mangroves themselves, so go for the paddle and the quiet rather than a nature lesson.
