Why go, and how to do it well

Charlie Beach, also called Hat Farang, is the main swimming beach on Koh Mook, a curve of white sand on the island's west coast backed by trees and a few bars and restaurants built on the rocks at either end. The water is clear and sandy-bottomed for an easy swim, there's snorkeling off both ends, and because it faces west it's where the island gathers for the sunset.

It's also the start for the Emerald Cave on your own. Kayak rentals open around 07:00, and the cave is about 30 minutes' paddle up the coast, so you can be through the tunnel before the tour boats arrive. Sunbeds come free with a drink at most of the bars. The beach is about 35–40 minutes' walk or a ฿50 sidecar taxi from the village and pier, and the high-tide line collects plastic, so the best of it is early in the day.

Tips for Visiting Beaches

Go Early for Empty Sand

Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. A sunrise walk is the best hour of the day on the sand, and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.

Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.
