Why go, and how to do it well

The Sea Turtle Conservation Center is a turtle nursery run by the Royal Thai Navy's Third Fleet on its base at Thap Lamu, just south of Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park and about 20 minutes' drive from central Khao Lak. Young sea turtles are raised in ponds here and released into the Andaman Sea, and injured turtles are cared for.

It's a short, easy visit that works well with children, and it's on the way to or from Thap Lamu pier if you're heading out to the Similan Islands. Many half-day bamboo rafting tours from Khao Lak stop here too.
