Why go, and how to do it well
Ban Nam Khem was a fishing village on the coast north of Khao Lak, and on 26 December 2004 the tsunami nearly wiped it out. The memorial park built in its memory centers on a long curved wall, shaped to recall the wave, set with plaques bearing the names of more than a thousand of the people who died in the area. There's also a seated Buddha.
It's a quieter, more personal place than Police Boat 813 in Bang Niang, about 25 km to the south, and it's the one I'd add if the boat leaves you wanting to understand more. Some of the displays have faded, and the wall is the reason to come.

Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
Go Early Morning
Big-name temples are dramatically less crowded in the first hour after opening. You'll also avoid the worst of the midday heat and get softer light for photos.
