Khao Lak Muay Thai & Muay Boran is a traditional Thai boxing gym in Khuek Khak, on the Khao Lak coast north of Phuket, and it takes everyone from complete beginners to experienced fighters. Group classes run Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 10:00 and again from 16:00 to 18:00. Each one is built around heavy bags, one-on-one pad work with a trainer, and technique and fitness drills, with sparring optional. Alongside the Thai boxing, the gym teaches Muay Boran, the older art Muay Thai grew out of.
You can walk into a single group class without booking for ฿300 plus VAT, and the price per class falls with a pack, ฿3,000 for 12 sessions or ฿10,000 for 48. Private lessons cost ฿800 an hour with the trainer of your choice and fit between or after the group sessions. The head trainer, Kru Padu, is a former world champion, and the coaches have more than 700 fights between them. For a week or more I'd take one of the gym's training packages, which arrange a room at partner resorts nearby.
The gym is open Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 20:00 and closed on Sundays, and there's a sports massage on site aimed at training injuries. Book privates and accommodation packages directly with the gym.
