Why go, and how to do it well

Chiang Rai River Beach is a sandy stretch of the Kok River about 4 km west of the town center, backed by forest and a row of bamboo huts where families come for a long local lunch. It's ten minutes by scooter or songthaew from town, or a 45-minute to hour-long walk.

The swim is the reason to come, and the season decides it. From October to March the river is fairly safe to swim or tube in, but the rainy-season current is strong enough to be dangerous, so in the rainy months I'd keep to the huts and the shade. Go at lunchtime, order from the huts and take your time.
