Why go, and how to do it well

ChangChill is the sanctuary that a riding camp turned into. Its owner, Supakorn Tananseth, ran elephant rides in the Mae Wang hills southwest of Chiang Mai, stopped them, ran a bathing-and-feeding camp for a while, then closed for several months and reopened as ChangChill, where the elephants roam their land and visitors watch.

There are two sites, Hillside and View Doi, both in Mae Win, and each runs a half-day morning visit and a full day, with an afternoon visit at Hillside. A visit is a guided walk into the forest to watch the small herd graze and socialize from a distance, with time to meet the mahouts and hear each elephant's history. Arrival is between 10:00 and 10:30, and the drive from the city takes about an hour and a half.
