Why go, and how to do it well

Burm and Emily's Elephant Sanctuary, known as BEES, is a family-run refuge for retired elephants in Mae Chaem district, about three hours by road from Chiang Mai. It sits on more than 300 acres of forest, fields and streams, and it is one of the strictest sanctuaries in the country. Visitors don't touch the elephants at all. Bathing, patting and hand-feeding ended in 2018, and the visit is spent hiking the land and watching the herd from a distance. Rescued dogs and cats share the place.

Most people come on an all-inclusive stay of 2, 4 or 7 days, priced from ฿6,000, with transfers from Chiang Mai, a bed and meals included. The sanctuary picks up from hotels inside the Old City moat between 08:30 and 09:00, or from Wat Chai Siphum for everyone else. If you have your own transport, a one-day Observation Walk runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays for ฿2,500 a head (฿1,800 for ages 10 to 17), with breakfast and lunch.
