Why go, and how to do it well
The twin royal pagodas stand on a ridge just below the summit of Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest mountain. They were built for King Bhumibol's 60th birthday in 1987 and Queen Sirikit's in 1992, and they sit in landscaped gardens. The view across the highlands from those gardens is the reason to come, so pick a clear day, because cloud turns them into two pretty buildings and not much else.
The pagodas are run separately from the national park and charge ฿100 of their own, on top of the park's ฿300 entry for foreign adults. Most Doi Inthanon day tours stop here between the summit and the waterfalls, and the drive up from the Chom Thong junction is about 48 km of steep road.

Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
Go Early Morning
Big-name temples are dramatically less crowded in the first hour after opening. You'll also avoid the worst of the midday heat and get softer light for photos.
