Why go, and how to do it well
This is a temple for worshippers first and visitors second, which is exactly why I'd go. It sits out in Phra Lap, on the edge of Mueang Khon Kaen, and the pace there has nothing to do with the city center. You get the everyday rhythm of a working wat in the northeast, with people coming to make merit, monks going about their day, the grounds quiet in between.
Go early. The gates open at seven, and the first couple of hours are the coolest and the most interesting, since that's when locals turn up rather than tourists. Don't come expecting a headline attraction with signage and a ticket window. Come for half an hour of calm and a look at Isan Buddhist life as it's actually practiced. If your Khon Kaen trip is already packed with markets and lakeside food, this is a good counterweight rather than a main event.
