Why go, and how to do it well
If you've already done Sukhothai Historical Park and found it busy, this is where I'd go next. Same kingdom, same era, far fewer people. It was the second administrative center of Sukhothai from around 1250, and what's left sits in forest beside the Yom River, including dozens of temples, chedis and Buddha images running from the Sukhothai period into early Ayutthaya.
Two things anchor a visit. Wat Chang Lom, where the chedi is ringed with elephant buttresses, and Wat Khao Phanom Phloeng on its hill, which costs you a climb and pays out in views over the whole site. Between them it's laterite, weathered stone and shade, and the pace of the place slows you right down. The grounds are big enough that walking the lot in one go is ambitious. Rent a bicycle near the entrance and you'll see far more.
November to February is the sensible window, when the heat won't cut your day short. Cover your shoulders and knees for the temple areas, and wear something light.
