Why go, and how to do it well
Koh Naka Yai is a small, roadless island about 4 kilometers off Ao Por on Phuket's northeast coast, a 10 to 20 minute speedboat ride from the pier. Its one hotel, The Naka Island, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, covers much of the island with pool villas on the hillside and along the beach, and that is how most visitors know it. Facing east into Phang Nga Bay, it has a view of the limestone islands across the water that the west-coast beaches of Phuket don't.
For anyone not staying at the resort, Naka Yai is a short stop rather than a destination. Longtail tours from Ao Por often combine it with neighboring Koh Naka Noi and Koh Rang Yai, and the islands are a calm alternative to the long day out to Phi Phi when time is short.

Check Island Closures
Similan Islands, Surin Islands, and Koh Tachai close mid-May to mid-October. Some smaller islands reduce ferry service in monsoon season. Always verify schedules before planning your route.
Snorkel Gear Is Cheap to Buy
Rental gear is often scratched and ill-fitting. Buy a decent mask and snorkel at a Big C for 300–500 THB — cheaper than two days of rentals and much more hygienic.
Bring Cash to Smaller Islands
ATMs on smaller islands like Koh Kood, Koh Mak, and Koh Yao charge high fees and sometimes run out of cash. Withdraw enough on the mainland before heading over.
