Dongtan Beach

4.4(1,905 reviews)

If Pattaya Beach feels like too much, this is where I'd send you instead. The sand runs quieter, the water's gentle enough for a casual swim, and nobody's working hard to sell you anything. It sits off Thappraya Road, close enough to restaurants, spas and hotels that you can wander off for lunch and come back, but far enough from the loud end of town that you're not fighting through it.

Boat rental outfits work the shore if you want to get out on the water. Beyond that, the appeal is genuinely just sitting there. Weekends and Thai public holidays pull a crowd, both Thai families and foreign visitors, so a weekday gives you far more room. Early morning is my pick, a walk along the sand before the heat lands, or late afternoon when the light softens and the water's had all day to warm up.

Shade is thin on the beach itself, so bring a hat and sunscreen rather than assuming you'll find cover. November through April is Pattaya's dry stretch and the most dependable beach weather.

Tips for Visiting Beaches

Check Monsoon Windows

Andaman coast beaches (Phuket, Krabi) have rough seas May–October. Gulf beaches (Samui, Hua Hin) are roughest October–December. Plan your beach trip around these windows for calm water and safe swimming.

Go Early for Empty Sand

Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. Sunrise walks on Kata, Chaweng, or Railay are magical — and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.

Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.
