Why go, and how to do it well
The 5am opening is the whole point here. This is a park built around a cliff edge that looks east over the Mekong into Laos, and getting there in the dark to watch the sun come up over the river valley is why people make the drive. Turn up at midday and you'll get heat, glare and a fraction of the payoff.
The other draw is the rock art. Prehistoric paintings, thought to be around 3,000 years old, run along the sandstone escarpment, showing human figures, fish, elephants and geometric shapes. They're reached on foot along cliff-edge trails, which also take in the mushroom-shaped rock formations that wind and water have worn out of the stone over centuries. It's an easy walk rather than a hike, and it suits people who like to wander at their own pace. There's no real guided-tour machinery here, and I don't think it needs any.
