Pha Taem National Park

Pha Taem National Park sits on the banks of the Mekong River in Ubon Ratchathani province, close to the borders of Laos and Cambodia. The park is best known for its prehistoric cliff paintings, estimated to be around 3,000 years old, depicting human figures, fish, elephants, and geometric shapes along dramatic sandstone escarpments. Equally striking are the park's unusual mushroom-shaped rock formations, carved by centuries of wind and water erosion, which make for memorable photographs and easy exploration on foot. The surrounding tropical forest and canyon landscapes add to the sense of remoteness and natural spectacle that draws visitors from across Thailand. Trails within the park wind along cliff edges offering panoramic views over the Mekong River and into Laos, particularly impressive at sunrise when the light across the river valley is at its most atmospheric. The park has a calm, unhurried character that suits slow, independent exploration rather than guided tours. Good to know: the park opens daily from 05:00 to 18:00, making it well suited to early morning visits when temperatures are cooler and the viewpoints are at their most rewarding. It is located in Khong Chiam District, roughly 100 kilometres from Ubon Ratchathani city, so visitors should plan for a half-day trip at minimum and arrange private transport in advance, as public connections to the park are limited.
