Thai-Chinese Cultural Center

The golden dragon is what people come for, and it earns the trip. It sits in a shrine at the heart of a modern Thai-Chinese complex in Udon Thani, huge and gleaming, and most people underestimate the scale of the place until they're standing in front of it.

There's more than the dragon, though. A museum covers Chinese immigration and the mark it left on Thai society, which is genuinely useful context if you've been wondering why so much of Isaan's commerce runs through Thai-Chinese families. Then there's a landscaped Chinese garden, and honestly that's the part I'd give the most time to. After the gilt and the detail of the shrine interiors, a slow lap of the water and the planting is a relief. Give yourself an hour and a half, not twenty minutes.

Go early. The grounds are open and there's not much shade, so by early afternoon you'll be moving between buildings rather than enjoying them. It's a working cultural and religious site, so cover shoulders and knees.
