Phuket to Chiang Mai

From the beach to the old walled city, nonstop in two hours

By Mac Kiley · 7 min read · Updated Oct 30, 2026

Phuket to Chiang Mai is the length of Thailand, about 1,520 km by road, and the nonstop flight is the way I'd go. Thai VietJet and Thai AirAsia fly it about five times a day in 1 hour 50 to 2 hours 15, mostly in the morning, at about 08:15, 09:00, 10:40, 13:25 and 18:55. Chiang Mai's airport is 15 minutes from the Old City, so from a Patong hotel you're in Chiang Mai about four and a half hours later.

The one thing to plan is the ride to Phuket airport, about 50 minutes from Patong and an hour from Karon or Kata, longer in the late afternoon. Overland, one GreenBus coach leaves Phuket Bus Terminal 2 at 13:00 and reaches Chiang Mai about 24.5 hours later. The overland trip I'd pick is a flight to Don Mueang and the No. 9 sleeper train north that evening. There is no train from Phuket.

Key Facts

About five nonstops a day, about 2 hours

Thai VietJet flies at about 08:15 and 13:25, and Thai AirAsia at about 09:00, 10:40 and 18:55. Times move by up to an hour on some days, and on a few days there are only two or three.

Leave Patong about two and a half hours before a flight

It's about 50 minutes by car to Phuket airport from Patong and an hour from Karon or Kata, plus 30 to 45 minutes between 16:00 and 19:00 or in rain. Domestic check-in wants you there 90 minutes ahead.

It's about 1,520 km by road

OSRM routes Phuket Town to Chiang Mai's Old City at about 1,520 km and 19 hours at the wheel. As the plane flies it's about 1,190 km.

There's no train from Phuket

The rail option is a flight or a night bus to Bangkok, then a sleeper north. No. 9 leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat at 18:40 and reaches Chiang Mai at about 07:15.

One direct bus, GreenBus at 13:00

It leaves Phuket Bus Terminal 2 and reaches Chiang Mai's Arcade terminal at about 13:35 the next day. 12Go sells it for about ฿3,650.

Chiang Mai airport to the Old City is ฿160

The airport taxi counter sells a fixed ฿160 ride, Grab costs about ฿150–250, and the Old City or Nimman is 10–15 minutes away.

Flying Phuket to Chiang Mai Nonstop

Thai VietJet and Thai AirAsia, and most of the flights leave before lunch

Two airlines fly Phuket (HKT) to Chiang Mai (CNX) without a stop. Thai VietJet usually goes at about 08:15 and 13:25, and Thai AirAsia at about 09:00, 10:40 and 18:55, each about 2 hours. On some days the times shift by up to an hour (a VietJet at 07:20 or 07:50, an AirAsia at 14:55 or 15:40 instead of the evening flight), and on a few days only two or three fly, so check the time on your ticket rather than a list. Bangkok Airways flies Chiang Mai to Phuket on some days but, in the dates I checked, not the other way. Thai Lion Air, Nok Air and Thai Airways sell the route with a change in Bangkok.

The 10:40 is the one I'd book. You can leave Patong at about 08:00 after breakfast, you land at 12:30, and you're checked in to an Old City guesthouse in time for an afternoon at the temples. The 08:15 needs a 05:45 start from Patong, earlier than the first Smart Bus from the beach, so it's a car or nothing. The 18:55 suits a last morning on the beach and lands at 20:55, in time for a late dinner on Nimman.

A nonstop usually costs about ฿1,800–3,600 one way booked a few weeks out, before bags. They fill first around New Year, in January and over Songkran, which is when the cheaper fares with a change in Bangkok start to show. The quickest of those take about 4 hours and many take 6 to 15, so I'd only book one if the nonstops are gone, and only on one ticket through a single Bangkok airport.

Read from 12Go's flight search for eleven dates between 4 November 2026 and 15 January 2027; on some days a flight moves by up to an hour or doesn't run. Leave times allow 50 minutes by car and 90 minutes at the airport, plus a margin; add 10 to 15 minutes from Karon or Kata. The Smart Bus from Patong's Bangla police box runs from 06:00 to 20:20 and takes about 1h32, so it works for the 10:40 flight onward if you take the bus that arrives about 90 minutes before departure.

Patong → Phuket Airport (HKT)

An early flight north means a car at the door

The first flights to Chiang Mai leave at about 08:15 and 09:00, before the Smart Bus can get you from the beach in time. 12Go lists cars from Patong to Phuket airport from about ฿930, booked ahead with the pickup time fixed, so you aren't flagging a taxi at 05:45.

The Overland Trip I'd Take, a Flight to Don Mueang and the No. 9 Sleeper

No train reaches Phuket, but one of Thailand's best trains leaves Bangkok every evening

Phuket has no railway, and the nearest station, Surat Thani's Phun Phin, is about six hours away by bus. If you want to ride the train north, the easy way is to fly from Phuket to Don Mueang in 1h20–1h35 on Thai AirAsia, Nok Air or Thai Lion Air, which fly there all day, and catch the sleeper to Chiang Mai the same evening. Special Express No. 9 leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat at 18:40 on the newest carriages on the line and reaches Chiang Mai at about 07:15. Northbound trains also call at Don Mueang station, which a covered walkway links to the airport, so you can board there; check the Don Mueang time on your ticket.

A second-class berth on No. 9 is ฿941 upper or ฿1,041 lower, and the lowers sell out first, so book as soon as your date is fixed (bookings open 90 days ahead). I'd take a flight that lands at Don Mueang by mid-afternoon, which leaves room for a delay. If No. 9 is full, No. 13 leaves at 20:05 and arrives at about 08:45 for ฿771–841. Chiang Mai's station is 3.7 km east of the Old City, ฿100–150 by Grab. The Bangkok to Chiang Mai guide has all five trains and how to pick a berth.

Going all the way on the ground means an evening bus from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 to Bangkok (12–13 hours, ฿715–1,200, into Bangkok around dawn), a day in the city, and No. 9 that night, 38 to 40 hours in all. The Phuket to Bangkok guide has every bus north and where each one stops in Bangkok.

Book a mid-morning or early-afternoon flight from Phuket to Don Mueang and a lower berth on No. 9 for the same evening. You'll wake up in Chiang Mai.

The Direct Bus, GreenBus From Terminal 2 at 13:00

About 24.5 hours, and the through tickets via Bangkok

One bus runs the whole way. GreenBus leaves Phuket Bus Terminal 2, north of Phuket Town, at 13:00 and reaches Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 3, the Arcade terminal 3 km east of the Old City, at about 13:35 the next afternoon. 12Go sells it for about ฿3,650, and redBus lists the same 13:00 departure from about ฿2,000, so it's worth comparing before you book. 12Go also sells two through tickets that change in Bangkok, Lignite at 15:30 and Phuket Travel at 17:40 with Sritawong Tour on to Chiang Mai, both arriving at Arcade at 18:45 the next day for about ฿2,340–2,410.

That's a full day and night on a coach for about what a nonstop flight costs. I'd take it only if you can't fly. From Patong or Kata, allow 30 to 60 minutes by taxi or Grab to Terminal 2, and from Arcade it's about ฿100–150 by Grab to the Old City.

Chiang Mai Airport (CNX) → Old City / Nimman

The last 15 minutes in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai's airport sits 10–15 minutes from the Old City and Nimman. The taxi counter in arrivals sells a fixed ฿160 ride and Grab runs about ฿150–250. If you're landing on the 18:55 with bags, or heading straight to a resort out in Mae Rim, a car booked on 12Go is waiting in arrivals at a fixed price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Phuket to Chiang Mai.

Fly nonstop. Thai VietJet and Thai AirAsia run about five flights a day from Phuket airport to Chiang Mai airport, about 2 hours each, most of them before 14:00. Overland, a flight to Don Mueang and the No. 9 sleeper takes about 20 hours, the direct GreenBus about 24.5 hours, and a night bus to Bangkok plus the sleeper 38 to 40 hours.

About 1 hour 50 to 2 hours 15 minutes nonstop. From a Patong hotel to the Old City, allow about four and a half hours with the drive to Phuket airport, check-in and the 15-minute ride in Chiang Mai.

Thai VietJet (usually about 08:15 and 13:25) and Thai AirAsia (usually about 09:00, 10:40 and 18:55). Thai Lion Air, Nok Air and Thai Airways sell the route with a change in Bangkok, and in the dates I checked Bangkok Airways flew nonstop only the other way, Chiang Mai to Phuket.

About 1,520 km (945 miles) by road and about 1,190 km (740 miles) as the plane flies, roughly 19 hours of driving without stops.

No. Phuket has no railway. The train route starts in Bangkok, where Special Express No. 9 leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat at 18:40 and reaches Chiang Mai at about 07:15. Fly from Phuket to Don Mueang during the day and board the sleeper that evening; northbound trains call at Don Mueang station, next to the airport.

One direct bus a day. GreenBus leaves Phuket Bus Terminal 2 at 13:00 and arrives at Chiang Mai's Arcade terminal at about 13:35 the next day, about ฿3,650 on 12Go or from about ฿2,000 on redBus. Lignite (15:30) and Phuket Travel (17:40) sell through tickets with a change in Bangkok, arriving at 18:45 the next day.

About two and a half hours before departure. The drive is about 50 minutes from Patong and an hour from Karon or Kata, plus 30 to 45 minutes between 16:00 and 19:00, and domestic check-in wants you there 90 minutes ahead. For the 08:15 and 09:00 flights, book a car, because the Smart Bus can't get you there in time from the beach.

It's 10–15 minutes by car. The taxi counter in arrivals charges a fixed ฿160, and Grab is about ฿150–250 to the Old City or Nimman.
