Why go, and how to do it well

Haad Sadet is a small bay on Koh Phangan's east coast, walled in by jungle, where the Than Sadet river runs down to the sea. The river's string of small falls and pools is where several Thai kings came, and their inscriptions are carved into the rocks upstream, so the beach and the falls make one visit.

I'd come in the morning, swim, and walk up the river rather than expect one big waterfall. It's at its best after rain, because in the dry season the falls are a trickle. There's a small restaurant and a parking lot, but little else.

Tips for Visiting Beaches

Go Early for Empty Sand

Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. A sunrise walk is the best hour of the day on the sand, and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.

Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.
