Why go, and how to do it well

Coral Cave, Tham Pakarang in Thai, is a limestone cave on Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, named for calcite formations that look like coral. There's no road to it. You take a longtail from the Ratchaprapha pier in Ban Ta Khun to the lake's Khlong Long arm, walk through the forest to a small inner lake, and cross that on a bamboo raft to the cave. Reviewers put the walk at about 1.2 km each way, with a few steep steps and a rope to hold.

Inside, a guide leads you through chambers of stalactites and stalagmites by flashlight, and there are bats. Wear shoes with grip, because the trail gets muddy and slippery after rain, and bring a dry bag for your phone. Most people see it on a Cheow Lan Lake day tour or from a raft-house stay, and the lake fee is ฿300 for foreign adults plus a ฿40 pier fee.
