Size is the thing to understand here. This is a sprawling temple complex rather than a single building, with tropical gardens, a lotus pond and several separate halls spread across grounds big enough that walking the lot in the middle of the day is hard work. There's a tram doing a circuit for around 300 baht, and if you're travelling with kids or anyone who wilts in the heat, I'd take it without a second thought.
The highlight for most people isn't the main hall, which is fairly plain inside, but the museum of revered monks and its wax sculptures. They're unnervingly lifelike and it costs nothing to look. The architecture mixes Thai, Chinese and Indian influences, and the signage is genuinely informative if you're the sort who reads it. Some sections have been under renovation, so accept that one building might be wrapped up when you arrive. Crowds are rarely an issue.

Beautiful and peaceful temple with so much history. The tram service for 300 baht was super convenient and took us around the massive grounds. The lifelike wax sculptures of the monks were incredible and added to the experience. Loved the mix of Thai, Indian, and Chinese architecture—definitely worth a visit!
Nice relaxing place. Good history lesson if you like reading all the signs. A bit hot in the afternoon, maybe best to visit early morning. Gardens are well maintained and beautiful. A very relaxing environment.
