PHUPHA Thai food
Tucked away on the back streets of Ao Nang, this Thai restaurant draws a loyal following from both travellers and locals who seek out genuine Thai cooking away from the busier tourist strips. Dishes like chicken chilli basil rice and pineapple fried rice with chicken are frequently praised by visitors, and the coconut ice cream has become a draw in its own right. The combination of straightforward, flavourful food and warm, attentive service keeps many diners returning multiple times during a single stay. The setting is relaxed and unpretentious, with a menu that covers Thai staples prepared with care. Visitors have noted the food feels authentic rather than adapted for tourist palates, which contributes to its strong reputation among those who take the time to find it. Happy hour cocktails, including G&Ts, are available at 99 baht, adding value for those visiting during the afternoon. Good to know: The restaurant opens at 6:30 AM every day of the week, making it a practical option for an early Thai breakfast as well as lunch and dinner. Because it sits off the main Ao Nang thoroughfare, it may take a little effort to locate on a first visit, but most diners consider it well worth the short detour. Arriving outside the midday and early evening rush tends to offer a more relaxed experience, and no advance booking information is listed, so walk-ins appear to be the norm.

Visitor Reviews
Unfortunately only visited on our last day in Au Nang. We called in at lunch time after checking that the Happy Hour cocktail price of 99 baht included G&T, it did. We ate a papaya salad and a chicken with rice and egg.. They were so good we returned this evening. We shared fish cakes to start, then squid laab and curry fried rice with vegetables. Again all excellent. Thr main man is friendly and makes a perfect G&T. The ladies cook great food and everyone clears away empty plates/bottles, something not always experienced. We were given free ice cream. Prices are excellent. We have noticed most restaurants offering "Happy Hour" prices for drinks then overcharge on the food. This was not the case here. Highly recommended.
I stumbled upon this place one night for ice cream and it was everything I wanted. I had to come back for dinner the second night and it did not disappoint. I got the chicken chili basil rice and it was delicious every bite. The staff is super friendly and inviting. I’ll be coming back next time I’m in Thailand! ☺️
If what we eat matters, then where we eat l, matters as much, if not more. On the back streets off the beaten path. Well worth the journey. I returned every night for a week. Food is authentic. Heavenly. And good on the purse strings. This is #1 in Ao Nang.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food
Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
