Why go, and how to do it well
Think of this as a day out rather than a market in the old sense. Stalls and eateries are strung around a lake in Choeng Noen, on the Rayong mainland, and the point of the place is to wander, eat, buy a few souvenirs and throw food at the fish. That last bit sounds daft until you watch kids do it for twenty minutes straight. If you've got children with you, it earns its keep.
Don't come expecting boats laden with produce and grandmothers paddling between them. The floating part is the setting, not the shopping. What you get is Thai snacks, everyday goods, souvenir stands and sit-down eating areas spread across a fairly large site. It's a sociable, noisy sort of afternoon, not a quiet one. My advice is to go early. Doors open at nine and the first couple of hours are far more pleasant than the mid-afternoon crush.
