Why go, and how to do it well
This is where Khon Kaen eats after dark, and it hasn't been prettied up for outsiders. Stalls run down Ruen Rom Road with grilled meats, som tam, sticky rice, fresh produce, clothes, phone cases and the general everyday clutter of a working Thai market. The food leans hard Isan, which is the whole point of eating in this part of the country. You'll pay street prices and eat standing up or perched at a plastic table.
Go between 6pm and 8pm if you want it at full tilt, with every stall open and the crowd thick enough to make you shuffle. Later on it thins out but keeps going, which is useful if you've come off a long bus and want food at midnight. My advice is to skip the shopping side unless you actually need socks or a T-shirt, and spend your time on the food rows instead.
