Tha Maharaj
Sitting along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok's historic old town, this open-air shopping complex occupies a working pier within easy walking distance of the Grand Palace and surrounding temples. Its riverside position makes it a natural pause point for visitors travelling by boat, and the relaxed waterfront atmosphere sets it apart from Bangkok's larger, busier indoor malls. The complex brings together air-conditioned restaurants, dessert shops, and coffee chains — including international names such as Starbucks — alongside smaller vendors selling antique crafts and Thai amulets. Several restaurants and cafes offer direct views over the river, and a food court provides a practical, affordable option for a mid-sightseeing meal. Visitors with an interest in history and traditional Thai collectibles will find the amulet and antique stalls particularly appealing, though the overall shopping selection is modest in scale. Honest expectations help here: the riverside walkway is short, and the venue works best as a convenient stop rather than a standalone destination. It is well suited for cooling down between temple visits, grabbing a meal, or boarding a river ferry. Mornings and late afternoons are the more comfortable times to visit given the exposed riverside setting, and carrying cash is advisable for smaller vendors throughout the complex.

Visitor Reviews
A very touristy place that's close to temples and surrounded by antique crafts and well-preserved Thai amulets. If you like everything related to history and antiquity, this place is like a small market where there are always activities to do. Inside, you'll find shops selling crafts, jewelry, food, souvenirs, etc. It's also where the ferry stops that takes you to different points along the Bangkok River! You can buy your ticket there too.
The riverside location on the Chao Phraya River is pleasant, not too hot, with viewpoints, photo opportunities, shops, and restaurants. I recommend the grilled pork panang curry at the food court on the 2nd floor. The panang curry sauce is very flavorful and aromatic. The grilled pork is perfectly cooked and fragrant. It's an interesting combination. The restrooms are clean. Parking is convenient, but there is a parking fee.
This shopping complex is conveniently connected to the pier, making it an easy stop if you’re traveling by boat. There are a few air-conditioned restaurants and dessert shops where you can sit and relax. A tip: there’s a free toilet inside—no need to pay for the one at the front, just walk in a bit further. The riverside view is lovely, and there’s even a second floor where you can stand and enjoy the scenery for free.

Tips for Visiting Markets & Shopping
Haggle at Markets, Not Malls
Prices at market stalls are negotiable — start at 50–60% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Fixed-price shops and malls don't haggle. Smile and keep it friendly; aggressive bargaining is considered rude.
Arrive Early or Late
Vendors believe the first sale of the day is lucky — you'll often get a better deal if you arrive right when the market opens. Late in the evening, sellers may also discount to avoid packing unsold goods.
Be Cautious with Tailors
Bangkok has excellent tailors, but also many tourist traps. Avoid anyone offering suspiciously cheap suits or who approaches you on the street. Ask your hotel for recommendations, read reviews, and always get two fittings.
