Tha Maharaj
Tha Maharaj is a riverside shopping complex situated along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok's historic old town, within easy walking distance of the Grand Palace and surrounding temples. Its location at an active pier makes it a natural stopping point for visitors travelling the river by boat, and the open-air setting along the water provides a more relaxed atmosphere than Bangkok's major indoor malls. The complex offers a mix of air-conditioned restaurants, dessert shops, coffee chains, and smaller vendors selling antique crafts and Thai amulets — making it particularly appealing to those with an interest in history and traditional Thai collectibles. The riverside walkway and viewpoints draw visitors looking for a quieter place to rest between sightseeing, and the food court is a practical option for a meal mid-exploration. International names such as Starbucks sit alongside local eateries, and several restaurants offer views directly over the river. Honest expectations are worth setting: the riverside walkway is relatively short, and the shopping selection is modest rather than extensive. The venue works best as a convenient pitstop rather than a destination in its own right — particularly useful for cooling down, grabbing a meal, or catching a river ferry. Visiting in the morning or late afternoon avoids the most intense midday heat in this exposed riverside setting, and having cash on hand is advisable for smaller vendors throughout the area.

Visitor Reviews
A very touristy place that's close to temples and surrounded by antique crafts and well-preserved Thai amulets. If you like everything related to history and antiquity, this place is like a small market where there are always activities to do. Inside, you'll find shops selling crafts, jewelry, food, souvenirs, etc. It's also where the ferry stops that takes you to different points along the Bangkok River! You can buy your ticket there too.
The riverside location on the Chao Phraya River is pleasant, not too hot, with viewpoints, photo opportunities, shops, and restaurants. I recommend the grilled pork panang curry at the food court on the 2nd floor. The panang curry sauce is very flavorful and aromatic. The grilled pork is perfectly cooked and fragrant. It's an interesting combination. The restrooms are clean. Parking is convenient, but there is a parking fee.
This shopping complex is conveniently connected to the pier, making it an easy stop if you’re traveling by boat. There are a few air-conditioned restaurants and dessert shops where you can sit and relax. A tip: there’s a free toilet inside—no need to pay for the one at the front, just walk in a bit further. The riverside view is lovely, and there’s even a second floor where you can stand and enjoy the scenery for free.
Tips for Visiting Markets & Shopping
Haggle at Markets, Not Malls
Prices at market stalls are negotiable — start at 50–60% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Fixed-price shops and malls don't haggle. Smile and keep it friendly; aggressive bargaining is considered rude.
Arrive Early or Late
Vendors believe the first sale of the day is lucky — you'll often get a better deal if you arrive right when the market opens. Late in the evening, sellers may also discount to avoid packing unsold goods.
Be Cautious with Tailors
Bangkok has excellent tailors, but also many tourist traps. Avoid anyone offering suspiciously cheap suits or who approaches you on the street. Ask your hotel for recommendations, read reviews, and always get two fittings.
