Why go, and how to do it well

Koh Rang sits in the middle of the Mu Ko Chang National Park, west of Koh Mak, and six of the Koh Chang island guides I checked include it. They agree on why. It has the best snorkeling and diving in the area, with white sand beaches, a ranger station and only camping and a few bungalows to stay in.

You see it on a snorkeling or dive tour, which usually spends a couple of hours here with the boat anchored off the reef. Tours run from Bang Bao on Koh Chang, about 20 minutes by speedboat or up to an hour on a slower boat.

Tips for Visiting Islands

Check Island Closures

Similan Islands, Surin Islands, and Koh Tachai close mid-May to mid-October. Some smaller islands reduce ferry service in monsoon season. Always verify schedules before planning your route.

Snorkel Gear Is Cheap to Buy

Rental gear is often scratched and ill-fitting. Buy a decent mask and snorkel at a Big C for 300–500 THB — cheaper than two days of rentals and much more hygienic.

Bring Cash to Smaller Islands

ATMs on smaller islands like Koh Kood, Koh Mak, and Koh Yao charge high fees and sometimes run out of cash. Withdraw enough on the mainland before heading over.
