Why go, and how to do it well

Wai Chaek is a remote beach on Koh Chang's south coast, a half-moon of sand a few hundred meters long in a sheltered bay looking south toward the outer islands, with a hidden lagoon at its eastern end and a stream at its western end. There's nothing much built on it and no shops, which is the whole point. It's the beach to come to if you want sand with nobody else on it.

Getting there is the hard part. The land route leaves the unfinished road between Bang Bao and Salak Phet and runs down a steep, loose track with a river crossing, so only ride it if you're confident off-road, and don't run low on fuel. Most people come by longtail from Bang Bao pier or kayak round from Klong Kloi, and some speedboat tours stop for a swim.

Tips for Visiting Beaches

Go Early for Empty Sand

Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. A sunrise walk is the best hour of the day on the sand, and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.

Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.
