Why go, and how to do it well
Come in the morning. That's my main piece of advice here, because the grounds are large, the gates shut at 16:30, and northeastern Thailand in the middle of the afternoon is no place to be dragging a tired four-year-old between enclosures. Get there near opening at 08:30 and you'll have the cooler part of the day for the animals that actually move.
This is a family day out more than a wildlife pilgrimage. The tiger show is the headline draw and the thing most people build their visit around. If walking the whole site doesn't appeal, and it won't in April, there's a golf cart and a bus that loop the enclosures. Take one. It turns a slog into a half-day you'll enjoy, and you can always get out and walk the sections you care about.
Skip it if you're traveling solo and short on time in Ubon. With kids, it's one of the better ways to fill a morning in the province.
