Why go, and how to do it well

The Salak Phet mangrove boardwalk is a red wooden walkway of about 500 m that loops through the mangrove forest by the fishing village at Salak Phet, on Koh Chang's southeast coast. It's outside the national park and free to walk, and it's the easiest way to see the side of the island the beach strips don't have.

I'd go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when it's cooler and the light is better, and pair it with Wat Salak Phet nearby. Some planks are worn, so watch your step, and the signs are in Thai.
