Why go, and how to do it well
Ban Chiang National Museum tells the story of the UNESCO-listed Bronze Age site in the village of Ban Chiang, about 50 km east of Udon Thani, where excavations from the 1970s uncovered burials, bronze tools and the swirling red-painted pottery that has become the symbol of Isan's prehistory, some of it around 4,000 years old.
The galleries cover the dig and the settlement's long history, with labels in Thai and English, and an excavation pit with burials left in place is nearby. It's open from 09:00 to 16:00, Wednesday to Sunday, and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan a day trip from Udon around that.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
Go Early Morning
Big-name temples are dramatically less crowded in the first hour after opening. You'll also avoid the worst of the midday heat and get softer light for photos.
