This is a working temple first and a sight second, which is exactly why I'd send people here. It sits on Thanon Maliwan in Ban Pet, inside Khon Kaen city rather than out in the rice fields, so you can fold it into a morning without hiring a car or committing half a day. What you get is the ordinary rhythm of Isan Buddhist practice: people arriving with offerings, monks going about their business, long stretches where nothing much happens at all.
Go early if you want the light and the merit-making, or late afternoon when the heat drops off. Don't come expecting gold-plated spectacle or an information board in English. The pleasure here is sitting still for twenty minutes in a place that isn't performing for anyone. If you're temple-fatigued after Bangkok or Chiang Mai, this is the antidote.
