Why go, and how to do it well
Chiang Dao Cave, Wat Tham Chiang Dao, runs into the foot of Doi Luang Chiang Dao, Thailand's third-highest mountain, about 10 minutes from Chiang Dao town. The mountain holds more than 100 caves stretching 10–12 km, and five sections are open to visitors. The first chambers are lit and lined with Buddha images and shrines, and a reclining Buddha lies at the end of a paved passage.
The dark sections can only be entered with a local guide carrying a paraffin lantern, about ฿200 per group plus a tip, and the narrow, slippery passages and rock formations are the best part. Entry is ฿40 for foreigners, and the temple is open from 07:00 to 17:00. Allow about two hours, wear shoes with grip, and cover your shoulders and knees, or rent a scarf at the entrance. Some parts may close in the rainy season.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
Go Early Morning
Big-name temples are dramatically less crowded in the first hour after opening. You'll also avoid the worst of the midday heat and get softer light for photos.
