First One Night Market Talat Phlu

4.4(1,259 reviews)

First One Night Market Talat Phlu is a neighbourhood evening market on Ratchadaphisek Road in the Thon Buri district, drawing a predominantly local crowd rather than the tourist-heavy markets found elsewhere in Bangkok. Open every night of the week from 4pm to midnight, it combines street food stalls, clothing vendors, accessories, and everyday goods in an open-air setting with a notably relaxed and friendly atmosphere. A standout feature is the beer garden, which visitors frequently highlight for its lively yet comfortable vibe and eye-catching décor, making it a natural gathering point for groups looking to settle in for the evening. Food is a clear draw here, with an affordable and varied selection of Thai street dishes available across the market. The setting feels genuinely local, offering a contrast to more commercialised Bangkok markets, and the friendly atmosphere makes it an approachable experience even for first-time visitors to the city. Practically, the market is easy to reach without a taxi or tuk-tuk: Talat Phlu BTS station on the Gold Line is a short walk away, making it straightforward to combine with other stops along that line. Bringing small denomination banknotes is advisable, as vendors may have limited change. Arriving closer to 5pm allows for a more relaxed browse before the evening crowds build.

First One Night Market: A Delightful Tom Yum Mama Experience Nestled in the heart of Talat Phlu, First One Night Market is a stone's throw from Talat Phlu BTS station—a mere 10-minute walk or just 2 minutes from Thonburi Plaza. Despite opening in May 2023, this night market exudes a pristine and modern vibe, standing apart from the typical bustling, chaotic charm of Thai night markets. The first impression is striking: the space is vast, well-organized, and impeccably clean. Plenty of tables and chairs are thoughtfully placed across the market, offering cozy corners for visitors to relax. It’s a haven for Bangkok’s younger crowd, who gather here to unwind with friends, family, and loved ones. More Than Just a Market This market offers more than just food. From a lively beer garden with live music to beautifully lit tents for intimate conversations over drinks, the ambiance is vibrant yet relaxed. You’ll also find stalls selling clothes, accessories, and services like massages, nail art, and hair styling. There’s even a pet-feeding area for animal lovers. The food options are equally diverse, ranging from tantalizing desserts and street snacks to grilled pork (mookata). There’s truly something for everyone here. A Culinary Highlight One standout among the crowd is ธนรัศย์ ก๋วยเตี๋ยวต้มยำหมูบะช่อโบราณ, located next to the pub with live music. This humble stall, adorned with a playful Zimomo doll at its entrance, consistently draws a line of eager diners. Its menu is refreshingly simple, offering just three items: - Mama Seafood Hot Pot (135 THB) - Mama Seafood & Pork Hot Pot (150 THB) - Spicy Noodles (65 THB) While the menu may be minimal, the focus here is on mastering a few dishes to perfection. Tom Yum Mama: A Star Dish I couldn’t resist ordering the Tom Yum Mama after seeing it beautifully served to another diner. This beloved Thai dish takes the comforting instant noodles of Mama and elevates them with a rich, aromatic Tom Yum soup base. The soup, a medley of bold flavors—lemongrass, lime leaves, galangal, chili, and fish sauce—is complemented by fresh seafood, mushrooms, and herbs. Watching the chef prepare my order was a treat in itself. Each ingredient was carefully arranged, almost like a work of art, and the spotless kitchen reassured me about hygiene. When my dish arrived, the presentation was delightful: a steaming pot brimming with plump prawns, tender squid, enoki mushrooms, fresh lime, and perfectly cooked noodles. The seafood was impeccably fresh, with the right balance of tenderness. The soup’s sour and spicy notes were spot on, making each bite a burst of comforting yet vibrant flavors. Final Thoughts It’s easy to see why this stall is packed every night. The care and precision in every dish reflect the chef’s dedication to their craft. For just 135 THB, the Tom Yum Mama Seafood Hot Pot is not only delicious but an absolute bargain. Whether you’re here for the food, the ambiance, or a bit of both, First One Night Market offers an experience that will leave you smiling. Highly recommended.

Tips for Visiting Markets & Shopping

Haggle at Markets, Not Malls

Prices at market stalls are negotiable — start at 50–60% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Fixed-price shops and malls don't haggle. Smile and keep it friendly; aggressive bargaining is considered rude.

Arrive Early or Late

Vendors believe the first sale of the day is lucky — you'll often get a better deal if you arrive right when the market opens. Late in the evening, sellers may also discount to avoid packing unsold goods.

Be Cautious with Tailors

Bangkok has excellent tailors, but also many tourist traps. Avoid anyone offering suspiciously cheap suits or who approaches you on the street. Ask your hotel for recommendations, read reviews, and always get two fittings.
