If you only stop at one thing inside Sukhothai Historical Park, make it this. It sits at the heart of the old royal capital, a 13th-century compound of lotus-bud chedis, seated Buddha images and long rows of laterite columns that once held up halls now open to the sky. The central mondop with its lotus-bud tower is the shot everyone comes for, and it earns it, especially with the surrounding ponds throwing the whole thing back at you.
What makes it work is the scale. There's enough ground here that you can drift away from other people and just look at things. Go early, before the heat settles in, or come back late in the afternoon when the light softens and the stone warms up in colour. Rushing it is the one mistake I'd avoid. Anyone with an interest in Thai history will want longer than they planned.
