Lae lay @khao-khad
Situated in the Wichit area of central Phuket, this casual beachside restaurant stands out for its unexpectedly diverse menu, combining Thai classics with Italian and Indian-influenced dishes alongside halal options — all at budget-friendly prices. The setting by the water adds a relaxed, local atmosphere that complements the approachable pricing and generous portions. Visitors consistently highlight the quality and freshness of the food, with standout dishes including prawns in tamarind sauce, massaman curry, mango sticky rice, chicken satay, and spring rolls. The kitchen handles variety well, and the staff are noted for their friendliness. The combination of creative cooking, scenic surroundings, and affordable prices makes it a practical stop for travellers exploring Phuket beyond the tourist-heavy dining strips. Good to know: the restaurant is open seven days a week from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM, offering flexibility for both lunch and dinner visits. A small surcharge of around 3% applies to card payments, so carrying some cash is worth considering. Occasional reviews mention slower service during busy periods, so arriving outside peak meal times may result in a smoother experience. Visitor Reviews
From the moment we arrived, this restaurant was high on our list—and it certainly lived up to our expectations. The menu offers an impressive variety of Thai, Italian, and Indian cuisine, catering to a wide range of tastes. Although the selection is extensive, our initial choices proved to be absolutely spot on. The chicken fried with chilli paste and vegetables (Phad Nam Prik Pow) was beautifully balanced, rich in flavour, and perfectly executed. The beef soup – Kao Lao – was truly exceptional; without exaggeration, it was one of the most refined and flavourful broths I have had the pleasure of experiencing anywhere in Thailand. The depth of flavour was remarkable, and the portions were extremely generous—particularly the abundance of tender, high-quality beef chunks in the soup. Combined with genuinely friendly service and very reasonable prices, it is easy to understand why this place is consistently busy. An excellent dining experience from start to finish.
Delicious, fresh food with a wide variety of choices. This place proves that a local restaurant by the beach can serve fantastic, creative dishes at affordable prices. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. You can see that the team is well organized and constantly working—taking orders, cleaning, serving, and cooking. Everything is prepared fresh. I have never had fish served in such an interesting way before. Perfectly fried fresh fish accompanied by a vegetable and fruit salad. Honestly, this is one of the best restaurants I have ever visited. It is a place I will remember and definitely return to.
We had the prawns in tamarind, massaman curry chicken and mango sticky rice. The prawns were fresh and so good in the tamarind sauce. Highly recommend this dish. Likewise with the mango sticky rice - the sticky rice was nicely done. We were so impressed by these two dishes that we returned the next night. The massaman curry was good like elsewhere.

Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
