Mahanak Market
Tucked into a quiet soi in Bangkok's Dusit district, this neighbourhood market draws a loyal crowd of locals who return regularly for its wide selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, aromatic herbs, and ready-to-eat street food at prices well below what shoppers typically find elsewhere in the city. Jackfruit sold in bulk packs, sticky rice vendors, and BBQ salt fish are among the standout offerings, making it a practical stop for both casual shoppers and those buying in larger quantities. The atmosphere is straightforwardly local — narrow stalls, vendor calls, and the smell of fresh produce and cooking define the experience. It operates around the clock, offering unusual flexibility for travellers with varied schedules, though vendor selection is at its fullest and the atmosphere most lively during daylight and early evening hours. Compared to Bangkok's more polished or tourist-facing markets, this one prioritises everyday commerce over presentation, which is precisely what its regulars value about it. Good to know: the market sees its heaviest foot traffic during the early morning (5–8 AM) and early evening (5–7 PM) shopping rushes, so visitors who prefer a more relaxed pace should plan accordingly. Cash is essential, as stalls do not accept card payments. Comfortable footwear is recommended for navigating the busy aisles.

My favourite destination for affordable fruits and home to my favourite sticky rice vendor! Enjoyed bargaining prices and tasting fruits of the season. I go here every time I’m in Bangkok.

Tips for Visiting Markets & Shopping
Haggle at Markets, Not Malls
Prices at market stalls are negotiable — start at 50–60% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Fixed-price shops and malls don't haggle. Smile and keep it friendly; aggressive bargaining is considered rude.
Arrive Early or Late
Vendors believe the first sale of the day is lucky — you'll often get a better deal if you arrive right when the market opens. Late in the evening, sellers may also discount to avoid packing unsold goods.
Be Cautious with Tailors
Bangkok has excellent tailors, but also many tourist traps. Avoid anyone offering suspiciously cheap suits or who approaches you on the street. Ask your hotel for recommendations, read reviews, and always get two fittings.
