Wild Cottages Elephant Sanctuary Resort

4.5(273 reviews)

Sitting in the quieter Bo Phut area of Koh Samui, this cottage-style resort sets itself apart from standard island accommodation by operating an on-site elephant sanctuary where guests and day visitors can observe and interact with rescued elephants in a nature-based, non-exploitative setting. The property draws travellers who want more than a beach holiday, offering a meaningful wildlife component alongside a well-maintained pool area, gardens, hammocks, and in-house dining. Accommodation ranges from standard rooms to private villas, and the grounds are notably family-friendly — the resort provides buggy transfers between reception and rooms, which visitors with young children or mobility considerations will appreciate. The pool area functions as a social hub where guests can order food and drinks while watching elephants in the adjacent field. Dining options lean toward international fare, though vegetarians may find the menu limited. Good to know: This is a premium-priced property, and expectations should be calibrated accordingly — some guests have felt the experience does not always match the luxury positioning, so reviewing current packages and villa options carefully on the resort website before booking is worthwhile. Day passes are available for non-staying visitors who want pool access and elephant viewing. Comfortable, practical clothing is recommended for any direct sanctuary interaction, as terrain can be uneven and muddy. Booking ahead is advisable to secure both accommodation and preferred sanctuary experience times. Visit wild-cottages.com for current pricing and availability.

Visitor Reviews

We visited yesterday on a day pass, and it is a lovely place. We had use of the pool and gardens, plenty of loungers around and a couple hammocks too, we where able to watch the elephants in the field below using the bath and just roaming around, and at lunch we were able to help feed the elephants. We also took advantage of the Spa and had a full hour and a half massage and treatment, which is good value for money, and has left me feeling totally refreshed. We ate lunch in the restaurant, and the food is fantastic, it was all absolutely lovely, and well presented. All staff were friendly and attentive, and nothing was too much bother for them. With the day pass you do get a 1500 baht credit to use on food and drink while there. Which I will say you Do need to use all of the credit before you leave. If you DON'T your bill is added up on the individual items, plus the tax and service charge. This was confusing for us and the couple before us. As we didn't use the credit, we either had to pay the full amount or to order more food to the value of the credit, as it was near closing time, we had to take this as take away. This is not a compliant, but just to make you aware, as coming to the end of the day, to find you need to pay more than you had budgetted, can be a worry. As a business I can not work out, how you benefit from us taking away more food. Surely, if I pay you 2500 baht, and I only use 800 baht of credit, you are better off?

If you want a relaxing spot in Koh Samui with the chance to see elephants ethically, this is it. The pool area is perfect for unwinding and ordering food or drinks, with the added highlight of feeding the elephants midday. Service was excellent — the staff ensured I had everything I needed, and their attentiveness truly enhanced the stay. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Koh Samui.

Travelled with our 7 months old baby and we felt is very baby friendly. Despite the terrain and some hills, Wild Cottage has 2 buggies that send you from the reception to your room! We booked the family room and really love the facilities in it! Do check if they have baby cot if travelling with baby as we did not need a baby cot so we didn’t ask. Food was good, although there is only one cafe, but their great varieties of food will leave you coming back for more. Perfect for a staycation, just stay in the resort and enjoy the elephants and their facilities. As it is in the wild, do expect mosquitoes, but Wild cottage had kindly provided mosquito repellent. Understand from their staff that there will be more elephant joining soon! Can’t wait to see them!

Tips for Visiting Hotels & Resorts

Book Shoulder Season

May–June and September–October offer dramatic discounts (30–50% off peak rates) with fewer crowds. Weather is mixed but rarely a washout — afternoon showers clear quickly.

Compare OTAs and Direct Rates

Always check the hotel's own website after finding a rate on Agoda or Booking.com. Many Thai properties offer a best-rate guarantee or throw in perks like free breakfast when you book direct.

Pool Villa Doesn't Mean Expensive

Private pool villas in Krabi, Hua Hin, and Chiang Mai start around 2,500–4,000 THB/night — a fraction of Bali or Maldives prices. Search specifically for 'pool villa' to surface hidden gems.
