Khamthana Colonial Hotel Chiang Rai
Compare prices
Khamthana Colonial Hotel occupies a distinctive colonial-style property near the old airport in Rop Wiang, on the outskirts of central Chiang Rai. The hotel offers spacious rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, and a casual restaurant with a terrace, making it a self-contained base for travellers exploring the region. Its location comes with practical advantages, including easy access to surrounding local amenities. Prospective guests should approach this property with realistic expectations. Visitor reviews consistently note that the hotel's online photos do not accurately reflect its current condition — the building and rooms show their age, with worn furnishings and dated decor that many feel falls short of a four-star standard. That said, some guests report clean, comfortable rooms and helpful service, suggesting experiences can vary. The colonial atmosphere retains a certain old-world character, and those who appreciate vintage style over modern polish may find more to like here than others. Travellers are strongly advised to review recent guest photos before booking rather than relying solely on the hotel's official imagery. Checking in with the front desk ahead of arrival to confirm reservations is also recommended, as some guests have reported disorganisation upon check-in. The hotel suits budget-conscious travellers or those passing through Chiang Rai who prioritise space and a pool over contemporary amenities. The website at khamthanahotel.com provides further details on room types and rates.

Visitor Reviews
Very comfortable rooms. Great service. Well maintained. Nearby old airport with lots of surrounding amenities.
The hotel was probably amazing in the 1980s but that was a long time ago. Everything is very clean and well-kept, but it is very out of date - from the old fashioned keys and the very old air conditioning to the outdated furniture and TV. The service is fine, but the food is not great to say the least.
Unfortunately, Khamthana Colonial Hotel Chiang Rai did not meet the expectations of a 4-star hotel. The rooms and the building are very old and in need of renovation. The staff was not very professional: at the restaurant, no one spoke English, making communication very difficult especially for someone with dietary restrictions. I eventually managed to eat well, but it was stressful and exhausting to explain my needs. Even at the reception, some staff seemed annoyed by simple questions like where to pay for dinner. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for true 4-star comfort and service.
