Krabi Roaming Elephant Sanctuary

4.9(153 reviews)

Situated in Ao Nang, this sanctuary takes a firmly ethical approach to elephant tourism, operating under a strict no-touching policy that prioritises the animals' wellbeing above all else. Retired and rescued elephants live in open, naturalistic surroundings where visitors observe them going about their daily routines — mud bathing, swimming, and foraging — rather than performing for crowds. Tour guides provide context on each elephant's history and the broader realities of elephant conservation in Thailand, giving the experience genuine educational depth alongside its natural appeal. Visits are available in different formats, including a two-hour Mini Moment and a three-hour half-day tour, both of which have drawn praise from families with young children and solo travellers alike. Tours typically begin with breakfast and a briefing from a guide before heading out to spend time with the herd. The sanctuary's relaxed pace and open environment make it well suited to anyone wanting a meaningful wildlife encounter without the crowds or commercial atmosphere found at larger operations. Booking in advance is strongly recommended, as time slots fill quickly. The sanctuary communicates with guests via WhatsApp, which visitors find convenient for confirmations and last-minute queries. Third-party platforms such as GetYourGuide offer pickup and breakfast inclusions, making logistics straightforward. Wear clothes you do not mind getting muddy, and bring a light layer for the early morning start.

Visitor Reviews

The most magical experience! We opted for the 3 hour half day tour. As soon as we entered the premise we were greeted with breakfast and drinks. Then our tour guide sat with us and explained more about elephants general history. We then cut up some food for the elephants and made them sticky banana rice snacks to hide their medication in, which was a laugh because it was like making sushi. Then we got to watch the elephant eating it. No touching. Just watching from the barrier. Then we went around to see each of the elephants and learn more about them which was amazing to hear and see their personality. After the tour we had 1 hour to draw on our own bag and eat lunch as well. This was a nice touch as a lovely souvenir to bring home. Overall, I would 100% recommend this place. I was searching a lot to find a good ethical sanctuary in Krabi, where there is no bathing or touching, but this was perfect!

I can’t recommend this place enough! It’s a newer sanctuary for retired elephants. It’s ethical and you can’t touch the elephants but we got to see them do their daily routine, take a mud bath, swim, interact with their mahouts, and enjoy their retirement. They truly care about the elephants here, it’s obvious. The sanctuary is on 5 beautiful and green acres. The guides are great, give you so much information on all the elephants and answer any questions you have. Pickup and drop off from where you are staying is included. They also have food and drinks as well as bags for you to draw with paint markers and stencils as well. They give you a basket of fruit and you can put it in the trough for the elephants to eat if they choose. I’m very glad I chose this elephant sanctuary to support!

I highly recommend this very well organised, well run, ethical Sanctuary visit. We did the 2-hour Mini Moment at 9am which worked perfectly for us and our toddler. Great communication on Whatsapp in advance about the booking and hotel pickup. The facility is brand new, very clean and in a stunning location. When we arrived, we were offered a wide selection of snacks and drinks while our guide gave an intro about the elephants and the sanctuary's work. In the 2 hours, we toured the beautiful grounds to see 4 elephants, which we observed from a respectful distance, but still close enough for a great view and photos. No riding, bathing or hands-on contact, so the sanctuary really lives up to it's ethical positioning. Highly recommend!

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
