Joy’s place
Tucked along Route 1095 in Pai, Joy's Place has built a loyal following among both travellers and locals for its unpretentious, home-cooked Thai food served at some of the lowest prices in town. Dishes are prepared in the style of a Thai home kitchen — generous portions, bold flavours, and a warmth that feels personal rather than commercial. Highlights from regular visitors include papaya salad, pad thai, and fresh fruit smoothies, with many guests returning multiple times during a single stay in Pai. The atmosphere is simple and casual, with a cosy character that suits the relaxed pace of the town. Joy's Place also caters well to those with dietary preferences, with vegan-friendly options available alongside the standard Thai menu. At around 40 to 50 baht per dish, the value is a consistent talking point across visitor feedback. It is worth noting that individual dishes can vary, and some visitors have found certain meat dishes less refined than others, so sticking to vegetable-forward or noodle dishes may offer the most reliable experience. Good to know: Joy's Place is open every day from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, making it a dependable choice any day of the week. Pai draws significant crowds on weekends, particularly among visitors travelling up from Chiang Mai, so weekday lunches or early dinners tend to be quieter. No website or advance booking information is available, so arriving early during peak periods is the safest approach.

Visitor Reviews
What a great surprise. I first walked past this place on my way to eat somewhere else, but since I didn’t like that other spot, I decided to come back and I’m so glad I did. I paid 50 baht for a chicken cream curry soup, which was absolutely delicious. It was generous in portion size and mildly spicy, perfectly balanced. It usually comes with rice, but I asked for it without rice and it was still more than enough. I was already full, and honestly, I considered ordering another dish just because it was SO good. I had dinner around 8:15 pm, and the atmosphere was very calm. There were quite a few takeaway, but the place itself felt peaceful. The ladies working there are a bit serious, but the food is excellent. It’s also just a few steps from the start of the night market, so it’s easy to grab dessert afterward. If I had found this place earlier, I would have eaten here every day. Highly recommended!
Excellent delicious food. Joy gives you a lot of food for only 40 Bahts for each dish (as of December 12th, 2025). The way your Thai mother or grandmother would cook at home. I've tried 5 different dishes and they were all Excellent!!! Highly highly recommended 👌 Scale 1-10: Food-10 Price-10 Service-10 Atmosphere-5 Cleanliness-8

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food
Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
