Pai Canyon

4.5(8,066 reviews)

Perched just outside the town of Pai in Mae Hong Son province, this striking canyon draws visitors with its dramatic eroded ridges, rust-coloured rock formations, and wide open views across the surrounding valley. The narrow hiking trails wind along the tops of the ridges, requiring some light scrambling and a steady footing, making it a rewarding stop for those who enjoy being active outdoors. The late afternoon light in particular gives the landscape a warm, golden quality that photographers and nature lovers tend to seek out. The canyon is free to enter, though a small voluntary donation of around one baht is collected at the entrance to help maintain the site. The trails are relatively short and accessible, though some sections are narrow with loose, sandy ground close to the edges, so appropriate footwear and a degree of caution are worthwhile. The open grounds also include a small shrine area, adding a quiet cultural dimension to the visit. Sunset is the most popular time to visit, and the site becomes significantly crowded in the late afternoon as a result. Those who prefer a more peaceful experience may find an early morning visit, shortly after the 06:00 opening, considerably more enjoyable. The canyon is open every day from 06:00 to 19:00, giving visitors flexibility to plan around the midday heat or the busy evening rush.

Visitor Reviews

Pai Canyon is one of Pai’s most iconic natural viewpoints — a rugged canyon with narrow ridges, sweeping views, and stunning golden light, especially near sunset. It’s a must-see for nature lovers and photographers. Highlights • Epic views and ridgelines — the canyon’s narrow paths and ridges create dramatic landscapes you won’t forget • Sunset is gorgeous — warm light and long shadows make for spectacular photos • Easy to explore on foot — several paths let you wander, lookouts vary in height and view • Great for photography — sharp edges, textured earth, and unmatched horizon views • Natural, raw vibe — not manicured like some tourist spots, which makes it feel more adventurous Good to Know • Some ridge areas are narrow and uneven — wearing good shoes and watching your footing is recommended • Sunrise and sunset times bring better colors, but also more people — arrive early if you want a quieter experience • Bring water and sun protection — it can get hot and exposed when walking around • Not all edges have railings — be careful if you’re near cliff edges Overall Pai Canyon is a stand-out natural landmark with unforgettable views. It’s perfect for a short hike, spectacular photos, and watching the sun move over dramatic terrain. Even a quick stop here adds a memorable moment to your Pai trip.

Pai Canyon is an amazing viewpoint with dramatic ridges and beautiful valley views, especially in the late afternoon light. However, at sunset it gets extremely crowded with tourists, and unfortunately some visitors don’t behave respectfully (loud music, pushing for photos, ignoring safety). If you want a calmer experience, go earlier in the day or closer to sunrise. The trails are narrow with steep drops, so good shoes and extra caution are important.

Beautiful place. Amazing view. Free for entrance but they expect you to pay a few bahts for keeping the place clean. Some paths are very narrow with slippery sand that is close to the edge. Pretty sure there are many accidents in the site because it looks so dangerous

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
