ด่อง-Dông.cnx (local food)
Tucked along Prapokklao Road near Chiang Mai's old city, this evening-only Northern Thai restaurant has built a strong following for its authentic, regionally rooted cooking. Dishes span classic northern specialties including Khao Soi, grilled pork belly, sour pork soup, and crab paste, with the kitchen drawing consistent praise for bold, well-balanced flavours that feel closer to home cooking than to tourist-facing fare. The format lends itself well to solo diners and small groups alike, with a small plates menu that encourages sharing and sampling across multiple dishes. Prices are approachable — sour pork soup runs around 79 THB per serving — and the air-conditioned interior keeps things comfortable during warm Chiang Mai evenings. The atmosphere is casual and unfussy, with a focus firmly on the food rather than the setting. Good to know: Dông opens at 4:00 PM and closes at 11:00 PM, seven days a week, with no weekly closing day. The restaurant sits close to the Tha Phae Walking Street area, making it a natural stop for those already exploring the old city on foot in the evening. Arriving closer to opening time is advisable, as the venue tends to draw crowds as the night progresses. Check the LinkTree link for current menu information before visiting.

Visitor Reviews
Incredible Northern Thai Dinner! We just had an amazing meal here and were blown away by the flavors. We tried the northern Pork Khao Soi, grilled pork belly, Sam Chun Yang, and the crab paste with egg — every single dish was outstanding. The portions are intentionally small, which is perfect because you can try lots of different meals without feeling overly full. It made the whole experience even better. The restaurant itself is small and cozy, with super friendly staff and excellent service. You can really feel the care they put into their cooking. If you’re in the area and want a memorable Northern Thai dining experience, this place is a must-try!
This Northern Thai restaurant at Tha Phae Walking Street is a great spot to enjoy authentic local food while walking around the old city. The flavors are rich and well-balanced, with classic northern dishes that taste truly homemade and authentic. The atmosphere is lively but comfortable, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Prices are reasonable for the location, making it an easy and enjoyable stop for anyone visiting Chiang Mai and exploring the Tha Phae area.
This Thai restaurant offers a great variety of dishes, from spicy minced meat to flavorful soups and tasty appetizers. Every dish is well-seasoned and aromatic, with the spice level just right, enough to bring out the flavor without being overwhelming. The presentation is lovely too, with banana leaves and bamboo containers adding a nice traditional touch. Overall, a satisfying meal that’s perfect for anyone who enjoys Thai flavors but doesn’t want it too spicy! 🇹🇭✨

Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
