Bar.San.

4.8(385 reviews)

Tucked along Charoen Prathet Road near the Night Bazaar and the Ping River, Bar.San. has established itself as one of Chiang Mai's most accomplished cocktail bars. The focus here is firmly on craft: inventive signature cocktails sit alongside classic preparations, and the bar's attention to detail extends from the drinks menu through to the service, which visitors consistently describe as warm and genuinely hospitable. The food offering leans into refined bar snacks and small plates rather than a full dining menu — dishes like tuna tataki, beef tartare, corn ribs, and fig with pistachio give a sense of the kitchen's ambition. Portions are designed to complement drinking rather than replace a meal, so arriving having already eaten elsewhere is a reasonable approach. The overall atmosphere skews high-end and considered, making it a better fit for a slower, more attentive evening than a casual drop-in. Good to know: Because Bar.San. is a smaller, quality-focused venue, it can fill up — particularly during the cooler high season months of November through February when evening socialising peaks in Chiang Mai. No website or booking platform appears to be listed online, so it is worth calling ahead or arriving early to secure a spot. The surrounding Charoen Prathet Road area is well-served by songthaew and ride-hailing apps from most central accommodation.

Food here does not have a lot of things to talk about since it’s just small plates/bar snacks. Not worth spending more on food since you can have Ekachan just 120m up the road then have your name on the waiting list at Bar San. Figs were good but it’s light honey figs so the flavors were pretty mild. Vinaigrette is sweet savoury but not enough acid to make up for the lacking tartness of the figs. Lotus root & Shrimp sando was interesting. Slight bite from the root but the matcha salt was eh. Could have gone for a better combo of condiments than the calamansi/matcha salt since burnt citrus doesn’t go very well with bitter seaweed-y matcha. Grilled Beef Tongue is supposedly Bar.San’s best seller but it’s pretty underwhelming. Miso was a pretty good condiment giving it the salt it needed badly. Other than that it’s just a chewy cut dipped into a creamy pasteurized yolk. Drinks were really nice. I got an Crudo and Wolf of Tokyo and wifey got Matcha Coconut and Soundless. Each one has a really unique and interesting. I’m positive you should really consider them beyond the context of alcoholic drink and more of a blank canvas for flavor (and alcohol ofc) since it comes in sweet, savoury, salty, acidic, bitter, e.t.c the list goes on. Bar.San does their drinks really well considering it’s Japanese in Thailand. Pretty sure the best place to sit for a date is 2nd floor where it’s more private and moody but sit at the bar top for a show and sometimes drinks with the owner/bartender.

The food and the cocktails were extraordinary. Everything was top quality and reasonibly priced. We ordered tuna tataki, corn ribs, figs&pistachio, and beef tartare as foods. And for drinks we went with Shiozakurra Collin, Midori sake sour, Crudo, and Ume old fashioned. Crudo was by far a favorite but the other cocktails were exceptional too. Staff was really worth to mention, they were informative, kind and true professionals. The only thing was they were out of Chiang Mai Morning Market cocktail but still charged me and I didn't realized, so make sure you review the bill thoroughly 🥲

We love this bar. Excellent service, delicious food and amazing cocktails. They do their signature cocktail , also do the classic cocktails which is very important that customers like my husband always wanted something classic. Totally understand why they are top 1 In chiang mai Fish slider - must order if you see in the food menu, very good, i like the curry sauce. We order 6 drinks and 3 bar food with in 90mins, definitely on holiday mode. Will come again, wait next time travel to chiang mai.

Tips for Visiting Nightlife & Bars

Carry Your Passport or a Copy

Clubs and some bars check IDs strictly, especially in Bangkok's Thonglor, RCA, and Sukhumvit areas. A photo of your passport info page on your phone usually works, but carrying a laminated photocopy is safer.

Know the Closing Times

Legal closing time is 2 AM for most venues, though enforcement varies. In Bangkok's designated entertainment zones (RCA, Silom Soi 2/4, Khao San), some clubs stay open until 4 AM. Islands tend to be more relaxed about hours.

Buy Bucket Drinks Cautiously

Island bucket drinks (mixed spirits in a small bucket) are cheap and fun but notoriously strong and inconsistent. Stick to one, stay hydrated, and never leave your drink unattended at beach parties.
