Samkhong Boat Plaza Market
Tucked away in the Ratsada area of central Phuket, this outdoor market is a genuine neighbourhood fixture where locals come to shop for fresh produce, seafood, meat, and fruit rather than souvenirs. It splits into two distinct sections: a wet market side stocked with raw ingredients, and a cooked food area offering Thai street food, BBQ meats, sushi, and other prepared dishes. The result is a lively, practical market that reflects how Phuket residents actually eat and shop day to day. Visitors should come with realistic expectations. This is a working fresh market first and foremost, and the atmosphere reflects that — it is busy, unpretentious, and at times pungent, particularly around the seafood section. Those comfortable with an unfiltered local market experience will find good prices, genuinely fresh ingredients, and a wide variety of street food options all in one place. It is not a polished or tourist-oriented environment, which is precisely its appeal for travellers seeking something authentic. Good to know: The market operates Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from approximately 13:30 to 20:00 — it is closed Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, so check the schedule before making a trip. Comfortable, closed-toe footwear is practical given the wet market sections. Arriving earlier in the afternoon typically means better produce selection before stock runs low.

Haggle at Markets, Not Malls
Prices at market stalls are negotiable — start at 50–60% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Fixed-price shops and malls don't haggle. Smile and keep it friendly; aggressive bargaining is considered rude.
Arrive Early or Late
Vendors believe the first sale of the day is lucky — you'll often get a better deal if you arrive right when the market opens. Late in the evening, sellers may also discount to avoid packing unsold goods.
Be Cautious with Tailors
Bangkok has excellent tailors, but also many tourist traps. Avoid anyone offering suspiciously cheap suits or who approaches you on the street. Ask your hotel for recommendations, read reviews, and always get two fittings.
