Royal River Khwae Resort
Situated directly on the banks of the Khwae River in Kanchanaburi's Mueang district, this resort hotel occupies a genuinely scenic stretch of riverfront on the opposite bank from the famous Bridge over the River Kwai. The well-maintained gardens, pool area, and riverside setting are consistent highlights, and the staff receive frequent praise for their friendliness and helpfulness. Thai-style dinners at the property are noted as good value, making it a reasonable base for travellers exploring the region's significant World War II heritage sites, including the war museum and surrounding memorials. Guests should come with calibrated expectations. Reviews indicate the property shows its age in places, with rooms that can be dark and poorly soundproofed, and the overall experience sits more comfortably at a mid-range level than a full four-star standard. The surrounding area is quiet, with a handful of local roadside restaurants within walking distance. Check-in is at 14:00, which is worth noting for those arriving on morning transport, and the pool closes earlier than at some comparable properties. The cooler months from November to February offer the most comfortable conditions for sightseeing in Kanchanaburi, and this is also the busiest period, so booking in advance is advisable. Travellers prioritising a peaceful riverside atmosphere over polished amenities are likely to find the resort a practical and pleasant enough choice for a night or two while visiting the area.

Visitor Reviews
Beautiful property with great staff and only minor points of improvement We had a very pleasant stay at Royal River Khwae. The property is beautiful and well maintained – the pool area, garden and restaurant space all feel relaxing and inviting. Our room was clean, comfortable and the breakfast was absolutely excellent with a great selection. Location: The resort is located about 8 km outside of Kanchanaburi town, so you will need a Grab or taxi to get into the city or to restaurants and shops. There are no shops or convenience stores within walking distance, which was completely fine for us as we had planned for it and only stayed two nights. But it’s good for future guests to know. Minor points of improvement: The room itself is rather basic for a 4-star hotel. Our twin room had only one bedside table for two beds and only one power outlet next to the beds. The shower head is fixed (not handheld) and installed quite low – anyone taller than around 155 cm will struggle to wash their hair comfortably. These are small things, but for a 4-star category (and for the price of 2,600 THB per night), some guests might expect a bit more refinement and convenience. As vegetarians, we also found it a bit difficult to identify suitable dishes on the dinner menu. The waiter helpfully explained that most dishes can be prepared without meat or fish, which is appreciated – but it would be even better if vegetarian options were clearly marked or if there was a small dedicated section. My meat-free Pad Thai also arrived without any vegetables, which was unexpected. Dinner prices, however, were very reasonable for the hotel standard. Overall: A lovely, clean and beautifully maintained place with great breakfast and friendly service. The location outside the city was no issue for us, but guests should be aware of it. The minor room and menu details didn’t impact our stay much, but some travellers may expect more for this price and category. We still enjoyed our time here and would recommend it.
The checkin time Is later than most hotel. I understand it's mostly tour customer but 14:00 is standard check in time at most hotels. The pool closing too early but is a nice old pool with a depth of 2m. The garden is nice and excellently maintained. Smoking not allowed only in designated zones, not even on the balcony. The staff is excellent. Would recommend the hotel for relaxation. Breakfast is pretty good,.same level as most 5 star hotels in bangkok I would say. 15-20 mins travelling time to city but sometimes need to wait a bit longer for pickup.
Older hotel that doesn’t really live up to 4-star level anymore. But then, it’s not expensive either. The surrounding area is quiet with a few roadside restaurants within walking distance. There’s no gym or any facilities that allow for activities what I could see, except for an old ping pong table by the pool toilets. The pool is just ok. The sunbeds and the pole umbrellas are old, and it’s obvious that they haven’t been maintained. The umbrellas miss pins that keep them open, whilst some have ”temporary” solutions with rusty nails. We even saw some sort of insect cocoon hanging from a pole. I mean, it would take a few seconds to remove it. I’d say that lack of maintenance is the biggest issue with the place overall. There is one outdoors restaurant by the river which is nice. The food is mediocre and basically the only thing available. The place seemed so oddly quiet. Maybe it was because most of the guests were Thai and stayed in their rooms during daytime? But then, there was absolutely zero happening in the evening either. So if you’re looking for an old, quiet retreat, then this might be for you. It is, after all, quite affordable.
Tips for Visiting Hotels & Resorts
Book Shoulder Season
May–June and September–October offer dramatic discounts (30–50% off peak rates) with fewer crowds. Weather is mixed but rarely a washout — afternoon showers clear quickly.
Compare OTAs and Direct Rates
Always check the hotel's own website after finding a rate on Agoda or Booking.com. Many Thai properties offer a best-rate guarantee or throw in perks like free breakfast when you book direct.
Pool Villa Doesn't Mean Expensive
Private pool villas in Krabi, Hua Hin, and Chiang Mai start around 2,500–4,000 THB/night — a fraction of Bali or Maldives prices. Search specifically for 'pool villa' to surface hidden gems.
