Krabi to Koh Yao Noi

Twenty minutes across the bay from a mangrove pier north of Krabi

Take the Boat From Ao Thalane, or the Ao Nang Speedboat in Season

Krabi to Koh Yao Noi is one of the shortest island crossings in Thailand, if you leave from the right pier. The local boats go from Tha Len pier, which most maps call Ao Thalane, a mangrove inlet 31 km north of Ao Nang and Krabi Town. Speedboats cross to Tha Khao pier on the island's east coast in about 20 minutes for about ฿300, from about 08:00 to 17:45, and a slower longtail goes at 13:00 for about ฿200.

If you're staying in Ao Nang and would rather not drive to Ao Thalane, Bundhaya's speedboat leaves Nopparat Thara pier at 10:30 and 15:00 in season, about 40 minutes to an hour to Manoh pier, for ฿650, and boats leave Railay East too. I'd take whichever pier is closer to where you're sleeping. The fare difference is small, and the 20-minute crossing is the best part of the trip.

Key Facts

The Ao Thalane boats land at Tha Khao pier on the east coast, near Tha Khao and Klong Jark beaches. The Ao Nang and Railay speedboats land at Manoh on the southwest tip.

The Boats From Ao Thalane

Tha Len pier, which you'll see as Ao Thalane on most maps, sits in a mangrove inlet north of Ao Nang, where the kayak tours start, and it's the island's own link to the mainland. Speedboats leave at about 08:00, 10:00, 12:00, 15:00, 17:00 and 17:45 and reach Tha Khao pier in about 20 minutes for about ฿300. A longtail goes at 13:00 for about ฿200 and takes about 45 minutes. Buy your ticket at the pier.

The times shift with the season, so ask your hotel on the island to confirm the day's board. Tha Khao pier is on Koh Yao Noi's east coast, a short ride from Tha Khao Beach and Klong Jark and a little farther from Pasai.

From Ao Nang and Railay

If you're staying in Ao Nang, the speedboats from Nopparat Thara pier save the drive to Ao Thalane. Bundhaya leaves at 10:30 and 15:00 and lands at Manoh pier at 11:40 and 15:40, for ฿650. The 15:00 runs from late October to mid-May and the 10:30 from November to April.

From Railay, Bundhaya leaves the floating pier at Railay East at 10:10 and 14:40 for ฿800, and Koh Yao Sun Smile runs from there in the late morning and afternoon. Tigerline sails from Ao Nammao, between Ao Nang and Railay, at 11:30. These boats land at Manoh, on the island's southwest tip.

From Krabi Airport and Krabi Town

Krabi airport is 38 km from Ao Thalane, about 50 minutes by road, and 28 km from Nopparat Thara. Ao Thalane is the better bet after a flight, because its last speedboat goes at about 17:45, later than anything from Ao Nang. 12Go sells van-and-boat tickets from the airport from about ฿1,030, or take a taxi to the pier and buy the boat ticket there.

Krabi Town is 31 km from Ao Thalane and 17 km from Nopparat Thara, so from town either pier is an easy taxi ride, and 12Go sells van-and-boat tickets from town hotels too.

Koh Yao Noi Back to Krabi

From Tha Khao pier, speedboats leave for Ao Thalane at about 06:40, 08:30, 10:30, 11:30, 14:30 and 16:30, and the longtail at 07:30. Ask your hotel to book a taxi to meet you at Ao Thalane, and allow about 50 minutes from there to Krabi airport.

To Ao Nang and Railay, Bundhaya leaves Manoh at 09:30 and 12:20 and reaches Ao Nang at 10:10 and 13:00 and Railay at 10:30 and 13:20, for ฿650 to Ao Nang and ฿800 to Railay, in the same season as the outward boats.

Which Pier Is Better for Your Hotel

Most of Koh Yao Noi's beach hotels are on the east coast, between Tha Khao in the north and Pasai in the south. The Ao Thalane boats land at Tha Khao, the closest pier to Tha Khao Beach, Klong Jark and the resorts above them. The Ao Nang and Railay boats land at Manoh, at the far southwest tip, which suits Pasai and the west coast.

Either way it's a short taxi ride, and hotels will collect you if you ask. My Koh Yao Noi guide covers the beaches, the tides and where to stay, and the Phuket to Koh Yao Noi guide covers the boats from the other side of the bay.
