Shell Cemetery
Shell Cemetery is a national park site on the coast of Krabi where fossilised gastropod shells, estimated to be around 75 million years old, have compacted over millennia into dense, concrete-like rock formations along the shoreline. The geological phenomenon is genuinely unusual, and the site also offers elevated clifftop views across the sea, making it a layered experience for those with an interest in natural history or coastal scenery. The site has two accessible areas, with the second being straightforward to reach and the first requiring a more energetic climb. The fossils are best observed at low tide, when the formations are most exposed and clearly defined. The atmosphere is quiet and unhurried, leaning more toward nature appreciation than entertainment, and visitors should expect to spend a relatively short amount of time here rather than a full half-day outing. A practical note for international travellers: there is an entry fee of 200 baht for foreigners, which some visitors consider steep given the size of the site. The cemetery opens daily from 08:00 to 17:00, and checking tide times before arrival is strongly recommended to make the most of the fossil viewing. Those with limited time in Krabi may prefer to prioritise it only if their schedule allows, while geology enthusiasts and curious travellers will likely find it a worthwhile stop.

Visitor Reviews
A true hidden gem. It overlooks a cliff with a great view of the sea, which is a free bonus in addition to the mind-boggling history behind these rocks and geology
A great way to experience the nature of Thailand! Second spot had easy access, to access the 1st site you need to really climb! Both are beautiful!
This isn’t a beach for swimming and relaxation, but rather a place to get a closer look at fossilised gastropod shells from around 75 million years ago. Fossils are best seen at low tide. There’s a visitor centre that’s a recommended stop to gain some context about the place. It’s not too far from Ao Nang and easily accessible by motorcycle or Grab. The entry fee for locals is 40 THB, while foreigners pay 200 THB. However, it was high tide when I visited, and I didn’t think 200 THB was worth it at that time. There are three zones to observe the fossils, and it takes well over an hour if you’re keen to explore. There are many souvenir shops outside, but I found them a bit pricey.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Dress Modestly
Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
