Tamachat Vegetarian Restaurant.
Widely regarded as the biggest and busiest vegetarian restaurant in Chiang Rai, Tamachat draws a loyal crowd of both locals and travellers seeking affordable, meat-free Thai food in the city centre. The self-service setup is straightforward: diners choose from a rotating selection of freshly prepared dishes, served over healthy brown rice. Standout options include vegetarian Khao Soi and Tom Yum, and the variety is broad enough that repeat visits rarely feel repetitive. The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious, reflecting a local dining spot rather than a tourist-facing establishment. Staff are notably friendly and communicate well in English, which makes navigating the menu and format easy for first-time visitors. Hygiene standards are taken seriously — cutlery is boiled and disinfected, and the dining area is kept clean. Pricing is firmly budget-level, offering genuine value without compromising on flavour or freshness. A practical note for visitors: Tamachat is open daily except Sunday, from 7am to 3pm, so it suits breakfast or lunch rather than an evening meal. Arriving earlier in the day generally means the widest dish selection, as popular items can sell out before closing. After eating, diners are expected to return their plates to a designated area — a small but important part of the self-service etiquette here.

Visitor Reviews
If you're vegetarian go here!! We saw good reviews online and we were not disappointed. The staff were incredibly helpful and spoke very good English. As vegetarians sometimes it's difficult to differentiate what is veggie and what isn't. Here they made it very clear that the food was vegetarian and offered us suggestions. The food was spectacular. The Kao soi was different but in the best kind of way and the Tom yum was very delicious. The ladies who serve the food are very friendly and welcoming. If you're vegetarian and want good local Thai food, this is the place to go.
This is the biggest and busiest vegan restaurant in Chiang Rai. I ate lunch here a dozen times during my stay, and wasn't once disappointed. They've got a terrific selection of dishes. Most people get two or three items served on a plate of rice. Alternately, you can walk to the back part of the restaurant and order three or four different kinds of soup, including an excellent khao soi. The place is always clean, and the people who run it are lovely.
Enjoyed my vegetarian lunch here. You pick what you want and they serve it on a plate of healthy brown rice. Affordable, clean, and delicious. The cutlery is boiled and disinfected, the restaurant is clean, and the aunties running the place are so friendly. Love the homely vibe. If you’re looking for delicious, healthy vegetarian food, this is the place. Not to mention the variety of pre-packed snacks too.

Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
