Homchan
Set inside a beautifully preserved old mansion on Baanpa Pragarn Road in central Chiang Rai, this highly regarded restaurant draws visitors as much for its atmosphere as for its food. The interior is filled with greenery, creating a calm and refreshing environment that feels noticeably different from more conventional dining options in the city. The space carries a warm, elegant character that visitors consistently describe as ideal for unwinding over a leisurely meal. The menu centres on Northern Thai cooking, with khao soi — available in both chicken and beef versions — drawing particular praise for its rich, aromatic broth and well-balanced spicing. Chiang Rai-style noodle salad, pad thai, and pineapple fried rice also feature among the highlights, and the kitchen extends into cafe and dessert territory, making it a practical stop at any point in the day. The breadth of the menu and consistent quality across dishes have made it a repeat-visit destination for some travellers passing through the region. Good to know: Homchan is open every day of the week from 9:30am to 10pm, with no mid-day closure, which suits travellers on flexible schedules. The restaurant sits next to the Sann Hotel on Baanpa Pragarn Road, which serves as a useful landmark when navigating to the address. Current menu and pricing details are best checked via the restaurant's Facebook page before visiting.

Visitor Reviews
Absolutely loved this restaurant! It’s located in a beautifully preserved old mansion right next to the Sann Hotel, and the atmosphere alone is worth a visit. The place feels warm, elegant, and full of character — a perfect mix of traditional charm and comfort. The Thai food was truly delicious: fresh ingredients, rich flavors, and perfectly balanced spices. Every dish we tried was well-prepared and beautifully presented. Portions were generous, and the service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. If you’re in Chiang Rai and want an atmospheric spot with authentic and flavorful Thai cuisine, this restaurant is definitely worth adding to your list. Highly recommended!
Ate for 2 consecutive nights which by chance, we saw positive reviews on this restaurant. Ordered different food to try with dessert for the second dinner. Overwhelmed with the delicious taste, the curry Crab meat was the ultimate sumptuous with not spicy taste curry gravy, pineapple fried rice was excellent and entire fried fish was unbelievably crisp and tasty with the sauces. The Dessert brought us to another level of absolute satisfaction. Surprised that no Michelin rating for this restaurant but definitely, 5 star rated. Definitely, must try their food if you are in Chiang Rai. Just loved it with the exceptional environment setting.
An exceptional Northern Thai dining experience. The chicken and beef Khao Soi were beautifully balanced rich, aromatic, and delicately spiced. The Chiang Rai-style noodle salad was refined and refreshing, while the sai ua was perfectly seasoned and full of depth. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared and impressive. The atmosphere is elegant yet relaxing, prices are very reasonable for the quality, and overall it offers excellent value. Highly recommended for discerning travelers and if I return to Chiang Rai, this will certainly be a place I visit again.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food
Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
