Kha Lung Fried Chicken
This small fried chicken stall in the Wiang area of Mueang Chiang Rai District has quietly built a devoted following over more than a decade, drawing both locals and returning visitors who make it a first stop whenever they are in town. The focus is singular — freshly fried chicken with carefully developed seasoning that reviewers consistently describe as flavourful and well-executed, served hot straight from the fryer. The setup is straightforward street-food style, with a friendly owner who has become part of the appeal for regulars. There is no elaborate atmosphere to speak of, but the quality of the food and the queue of locals lining up are signals enough. Visitors note that the chicken sells out regularly, giving the stall an earned reputation that goes beyond casual foot traffic. Practically speaking, this is an evening-only operation, open Tuesday through Sunday from 17:00 to 21:00, and closed on Mondays. Arriving early is strongly advisable — multiple visitors report being turned away after selling out on their first attempt, only to return earlier the following evening with better results. There is no website for pre-ordering or checking availability, so showing up promptly after opening gives the best chance of securing a portion. It is a cash-in-hand, queue-and-wait experience, best suited to travellers who enjoy seeking out no-frills local food with genuine character.

Visitor Reviews
Jaw dropping flavours - must try for Chiang Rai. I'm a fan of Thai street food which in general is tasty, while strolling through the streets en route to the bazar I saw this store and locals lining up so I thought I'd buy a chicken thigh. There's a tandoori twist on the flavour and it works fantastically I was genuinely shocked how good the flavours and crispy skin on the chicken was. I had to buy more and since I was so impressed with the chicken I thought I'd try the yellow rice (biryani). It left me speechless how tasty it all was, fed 2 people for 150 baht and whilst eating there, so many locals came to buy dinner it's clearly a local favourite. I'm in awe for the flavours of this place it deserves 10 stars and I'd pay 10x the price happily. My only regret was finding it on our last night and only experiencing it once.
A Must EAT everytime in Chiang Rai! Very friendly owner too! Update Nov 2025: My first stop for food whenever in Chiang Rai. Been patronising him for 11 years now. Chicken still as good and fresh. Now he has briyani rice to go with the fried chicken and fried shallots! Super yummy!!!
Came the first day, sold out. Made sure I came earlier the second day, was worth the wait. Excellent seasoning and delicious fresh out if the fryer.

Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
