L'éléphant
Tucked into a quiet residential lane off Siri Mangkalajarn Road, this French restaurant brings an unexpected touch of European fine dining to northern Thailand. The space is known for its warm, intimate atmosphere filled with exotic-style artwork and carefully chosen furnishings, creating an ambiance that feels both cozy and special — making it a popular choice for date nights and celebratory meals alike. The kitchen draws on classic French techniques and also incorporates seafood, with dishes delivered at a relaxed pace that encourages guests to linger over their meal. Service is consistently attentive, and the overall experience reflects the kind of considered hospitality typical of a well-run fine dining establishment. The eclectic interior decor adds character to the space, though some visitors find it more ornate than expected — worth keeping in mind if understated surroundings are a preference. Good to know: L'éléphant opens at 16:30 and operates Tuesday through Sunday, so it is an evening-only destination by design. The restaurant sits in a residential part of Su Thep, which means it is not easily walkable from central Chiang Mai — a taxi or rideshare app is the most practical way to get there. Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly for weekends and special occasions. Up-to-date information on current menus and any seasonal arrangements is available through the restaurant's website at lelephantchiangmai.com.

Visitor Reviews
How can I have lived in Chiang Mai for seven years and never tried L’elepant? It is simply a fantastic dining experience that puts together an interesting and eclectic dining room with excellent service and food. Besides the obvious, there are some subtle things that stand out. One thing I noticed is that the tables were spread out amongst several rooms, making each party feel more private and intimate. They could have easily squeezed another table or two into each room, but have not. The food is an interesting take on French with the chef’s Asian interpretations thrown in. Our party ordered a wide selection of dishes, and each was very well presented and delicious. The French Onion Soup was the best I have ever had outside France. I usually don’t eat desert, but the Crème Brûlée was really good. The food prices were reasonable considering the quality. The wine list was extensive, but not cheap. They also serve lunch on the weekends, and we will be back for that experience as well.
We have been to many restaurants in Chiang Mai over the years, but this one is definitely the best! The ambiance was relaxed and cozy, with beautiful furniture and artwork, and warm decor. Our service was excellent and the waiters were very attentive. The chef came out to talk with us about our meals and we complimented him very highly. I had the escargot, the crab bisque, and the snow fish entree, and all were perfectly prepared, presented beautifully, and very delicious. My wife had the scallops with white asparagus, and the catch of the day (grouper) and she raved about how amazing both dishes were. I was impressed by their large wine list, also. This restaurant is a definite “must try” when you are visiting Chiang Mai, especially if you are looking for a really special experience here!
Perfect date night, or special occasion venue. The food is delicious, and it arrives in a timely manner, allowing you to enjoy without feeling rushed. The staff is attentive and works hard to provide top-level service. We went a la carte, which is still presented in courses, allowing you to have a fine dining experience without the full chef menu. Absolutely will come back as the menu changes to match local produce, looking forward to it.

Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
