MaeThum Padthai
Tucked into the historic Phra Nakhon district near the Giant Swing and Democracy Monument, this long-running pad thai specialist has earned its reputation through deliberate restraint. The menu offers just a small handful of pad thai variations — a philosophy rooted in doing one thing with serious craft. Fresh ingredients and traditional technique draw a loyal following of Bangkok locals and visiting food lovers alike, and the budget-friendly pricing makes it an easy stop to justify. The atmosphere is unpretentiously local, with the cozy, casual setup typical of a genuine Thai eatery rather than a tourist-facing operation. The owner is known for personally greeting guests and sharing the restaurant's history — reportedly stretching back over a century — adding a warmth that distinguishes the experience. Jazz music occasionally plays in the background, lending the small space an unexpectedly charming quality. Note that the pad thai leans slightly sweet by traditional standards, which is worth keeping in mind for those who prefer a more savoury or spicy profile; customisation may be possible on request. Good to know: MaeThum Padthai opens daily except Sundays, from 10:00 to 20:00, making it a practical choice for lunch or an early dinner while exploring the surrounding historic landmarks. Arriving during the mid-afternoon lull helps avoid peak queues. Cash is advisable, and checking the restaurant's Facebook page before visiting is recommended for the most current details on availability and payment options.

Visitor Reviews
Jazz and pad thai is a fab combination served at this wonderful, cute, delightful eatery in the Giant Swing district. While we don’t go out to eat pad thai often, incoming rain and the charm of the place, led us to Maethum and what a great decision that was. Besides five different types of pad thai they also serve hoi tod (oyster omelet) which made ordering easy and simple. There is a lot to be said for focusing on a few dishes and cooking them extremely well and Maethum is knocking it out of the ballpark in this regard. Their world famous crispy pad thai should be declared a national treasure - crispy noodles topped by a beautifully balanced tamarind sauce, radish, and plump prawns; accompanied by chives, bean sprouts and crushed peanuts was a sensational plate. Balance is the key word - everything worked well together - often the sauce is too sweet but that’s not the case here. The crispy pad thai is their signature dish and it is a “die, die, must try” order. The more traditional prawn pad thai was notable for its silky noodles, wok hei flavor, and juicy prawns. Simply put, come for the food, cool urban garden inspired interiors, and excellent prices. And last, but not least, the warm, friendly hospitality of the family (I think) who run Maethum - their loveliness and kindness is the secret ingredient that makes Maethum one of our fave dining experiences of the year so far.
Hands down one of the best Pad Thai I’ve ever had — maybe even the best. The menu is very focused, with only four Pad Thai dishes and one additional option, which probably explains the incredible quality. The staff was extremely friendly and authentic, and the owner himself was serving guests with amazing energy and good vibes. He really took care of everyone and made the experience special. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Bangkok — a must-try! 🍜✨
An absolutely fantastic place! Cozy, with local vibe, 6 pad Thai on the menu which means they know their ropes. The owner comes and talks to you. He said this place is more than 100 years old and the pad Thai recipe belongs to his mother. Super clean and relaxing place. Great for lunch in between temples hopping ☺️ so far the best pad Thai in Bangkok 🥰

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food
Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
